About Kira Farm

We accept 50 trainees each year

Many Kira trainees have grown up in extreme poverty; some are orphans and some have faced unimaginable hardships and abuse.

Each trainee is nurtured by the farm’s incredible team of staff and inspired to build a brighter future for themselves and others. They come to us without hope for the future and leave full of optimism, ready to transform lives.

During their year on Kira Farm, the Kira farm trainees learn to heal and to believe in themselves. They also learn the skills to transform their own lives and the lives of their families and broader communities.

Before I went to Kira, everything I saw at home looked dead or hopeless. Now I see these same things as an opportunity to improve life for my family and me

Joshua, the farm centre manager, spends many hours talking to potential trainees and assessing their potential to impact not only their lives, but the lives of their broader communities.

A Year on the Farm

Over the course of one year, up to 50 trainees acquire the practical, emotional and life skills to lift their families out of poverty and become catalysts for change in their communities.

  • On Kira, I learnt to love myself, smiling and feeling beautiful for the first time in my life. Kira gave me hope that I did not need approval from anyone to be whatever I wanted to be in life. I learnt to dream again and plan for a better future.

    Unlock a brighter future

Many of these precious young people have experienced violence, trauma and unimaginable suffering.

I have been told that you will be sponsoring my vocational training at Kira Farm this year. Receiving this news has made me feel loved. Thank you so much for your loving heart... I have always dreamt of a place like this, with big hopes for a brighter future.

    Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)

    combating period poverty and shame

Amigos’ Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) programme has been created to provide women and girls with reusable sanitary products, to educate communities on menstrual health, and combat period poverty and shame.

Long term, the programme will enable girls to go to school all month long, regardless of whether they have their period.

As well as providing affordable sanitary wear to girls who need it most, this programme also provides a potential income stream to Kira Graduates. Trainees are trained in making reusable sanitary packs, which they can then sell at an affordable price within their communities. In addition, community members will be taught how to make liquid soap which can be used for washing clothes as well as general hygiene. It is a win, win situation: trainees earn money, girls can go to school, and communities are educated on hygiene and desensitised to period shame.

Sponsor a trainee on Kira Farm

Trainee sponsorship is a great opportunity for a family, business, church, school or club to directly support a young Ugandan, and witness their journey to a hope-filled future.

You can sponsor a Kira Farm Trainee for £500 a year (£42 a month).

Alongside the knowledge that you are transforming lives, you will:

    • receive a photo and profile of a Kira trainee
    • be sent monthly emails and photos showing your trainee's progress
    • have access to Kira Farm’s email address to stay connected and encourage your trainee
    • be able to hold a Zoom or Skype meeting direct to Kira Farm
    • have the opportunity to visit Kira Farm

The impact of sponsoring a Kira Trainee is far reaching; upon graduation, most trainees return to their communities where they share their newfound farming and communication skills, set up their own business and employ others.
