Hear
Uganda is full of wonderful sounds. It is exciting to hear new types of bird song or a busy street in Kampala or to listen to people singing in a different language.
Activity
Most people living around Kampala can speak some English, because they are taught it in school, but the next most common language is Luganda.
Would you like to learn a new language? Look at this site http://www.buganda.com/phrasebk.htm to learn some words in Luganda. Find the words for items in your home and school, or for the foods you eat or clothes you wear.
Or
Look at the folk tales or stories in the books you read and the books other people read to you. Are these stories telling you about people who are being good or bad?
Are the stories funny or scary? What is the story trying to tell you?
Facts
There are many different tribes in Uganda and many different languages. Some people have moved from their original homelands because of war or famine, or have come to the city of Kampala looking for work. Because of this it is sometimes difficult for Ugandans to understand each other. Do you know any words that are used in your part of Britain that other areas of Britain don’t use?
Fund-Raising Ideas
Write a story that shows people how to behave, or tells people something useful, or warns people about danger.
Or
Write a story that is very scary or funny.
Or
Search in the library for traditional African stories.
Then join with school mates, friend or family or other people in a club or group to hold a story-telling evening. Ask for a small donation from anyone who comes for the evening. You might like to sell drinks or food too.
