Q. What is Kira Farm Training Centre?
A. Kira Farm is Amigos 22.5
acre demonstration farm and unique vocational training centre.
Alongside a comprehensive Farming syllabus, we also train in
Home Economics, Tailoring, basic Maths and English, Health & Hygiene,
First-Aid and a variety of relevant life skills. |
|
Q. Why Kira Farm?
A. Because
35% of Ugandan primary aged children drop out of school before
the opportunity to reach higher education. Most
Ugandan young people either own land or have accesses to land.
Amigos believe this is a great starting point for their future
existence.
|
 |
Q. Where is Kira Farm?
A. Kira Farm is located 14 miles north of Kampala, near a little town called Gayaza, (Wakiso District) Uganda. |
Q. Who is Kira Farm for?
A. Kira Farm has been designed to train disadvantaged (orphaned) Ugandan
teenagers, mainly young woman at this stage but as it's grows
we hope to take young men also. |
|
Q. What
does Amigos hopes to achieve?
A. Amigos
aims to build confidence, honesty and faithfulness into these
young lives so that they will become upright, trustworthy and
self-reliant citizens as they return to their various communities,
becoming the next generation of Mothers and Fathers. |

Fish Lakes
Four 25m x 50m fish lakes have been dug with one
of our two streams diverted to keep fresh water feeding them. The
lakes have been stocked with 4000 catfish (a delicacy in Africa).
Catfish take between 10 to 12 months to mature and the stocking
of lakes will be staggered to give a constant harvest of fresh fish
around the year. Not only can we train in the skills of fish
farming, but we can also apply a healthy feeding programme at Kira
from this highly nutritious source. We are also looking to
sell into the local market so that each lake will become totally
self-funding. |

Chickens
Chickens are an important part of Kira Farm for two reasons. Between
2,000 and 4,000 parent laying stock are permanently housed for
egg incubation purposes. The farm poultry project sells thousands
of one-day-old chicks into the Ugandan market each week, which
in return helps towards running costs. Every African loves chickens
so teaching poultry management is a very important part of Kira. |

Lessons, teachers and students
Kira
Farm offers hope to orphaned young people, giving hands-on skills
in a variety of practical ways especially when there is little
hope of any secondary education. |
 |
Kira Farm is based
on the “teach a man to fish” philosophy
embracing ‘do-able' village style models that will incorporate
many life skills
With short and long term training modules and a small team of
dedicated handpicked instructors, Amigos believe that they can
make a lasting difference that will permeate throughout society.
It is hoped that each student will embrace a good moral code
and work ethic for living in Ugandan society with self-reliance,
bringing positive change as the next generation of mothers and
fathers. |
The main thrust of teaching will be ‘in
the field' with sustainable, pioneering, crop growing methods
always at the centre of our programme. Chicken, fish,
rabbit, pig and bee husbandry will
be taught as small rural projects next to
Home Economics, Health & Hygiene and First-Aid
alongside basic Maths and English.
Amigos believe that Kira Farm students can become
a catalyst for change, as they demonstrate honesty, fidelity
and integrity, coupled with a good work ethic. |

Amigos
would like to thank eMi (Engineering Ministries International)
for all their help with planning the whole site, making sure
each facility is positioned correctly: farm buildings and vocational
classrooms to students' and teachers' accommodation. Kira will
eventually include a guesthouse for visitors to spend time and
share their practical skills and knowledge with the students. |
